The Trevon Martin shooting which took place in Florida last month has led to outrage in numerous communities throughout the United States.  Everyone has an opinion on this tragic case, even our president (see below).  Trevon wearing a hoodie sweatshirt has dominated the headlines this week.  The question for you is, should your choice of clothes determine if people view you favorably or unfavorably?

President Obama -
"Obviously, this is a tragedy. I can only imagine what these parents are going through. And when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids. And, you know, I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this and that everybody pulls together — federal, state and local — to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened."

Are we guilty too?  Did you judge these people based on their appearance?

  1. Trevon was a cool kid. No reason to die just for wearing a hood over his head....means nothing. The man who shot him should have gone to jail for killing him. R.I.P Trevon

  2. I'm going to stop wearing my hat and hoodie at night because Trevon may have been killed for wearing it and the man that did it probably regrets it but it's too late now.

  3. Trevon's clothes does not matter. It's just not fair because he seemed to be a cool kid. I wear a hoodie and people don't judge me for it so why did that man do that to him.

  4. Well style is style you shouldn't kill him for wearing a hooodie. It just doesn't make sense and it's not fair. Trevon did not deserve to die.

  5. I think you should not wear hoodies and hats because people judge you on what you wear. My friends wear hoodies and hats all the time. Trevon Martin wore a hoodie when he died. In 2012 that is what's called having swag!!

  6. No it does not matter what we wear.Even if it is a hat, hood, and shoes you don't like. You should not be killed or put down for wearing anything.I would not do that to anyone. Trevon got killed because of that.

  7. Clothes should not matter because you could look bad and be super good and sweet. The man who killed Trevon should be in jail for the rest of his life! Looks do not matter.

  10. I think Trevon should not die like that because he was a decent teen. But what if Zimmerman (the shooter) got shot because he wore the same thing as Trevon?

  11. I think Trevon should not have been killed for what he was wearing. Many people wear clothes like Trevon and they don't get killed. The problem is too many guns in the wrong hands.

  12. I don't think Trevon should have been shot because he was wearing a hat and hood. People should not judge others based on what they are wearing, The reason why Trevon was wearing a hood was because it was raining. I also think that Zimmerman should go to jail for shooting him.

  13. I feel sad that Trevon was killed just because he had a hoody on. I think it's
just wrong that he got killed just because he looked like a bad guy. He
probably had the hoody on because he was cold. R.I.P Trevon.

  16. Trevon should not be judged by his clothes. To support him I'm going to wear a hoodie and walk to the corner store and by some skittles every night. If I get judged by the way i wear my hat I won't care. Rest in peace rip Trevon!

  18. You should not judge someone by their clothes. Sometimes i wear my hood even when Im inside. I even wore my hood in Krausers and nobody thought i was a thug.

  19. I dont think it was really fair what happened to Trevon. It was very tragic that he got shot at only 17. He had a very short life for what he was wearing and Mr. Zimmermin should be arrested soon. His parents must be very upset.

  20. No it should not matter what clothes a person wears because I have friends who dress like Trevon especially when it is cold outside and they are good kids.

  21. No because you should not be judged by your clothing. Its not good and it's not nice.

  22. First, I want to commend everyone for a job well done. You are now published writers. Just about all of your comments bring up how it is wrong to judge others based on what they wear. Which sounds completely reasonable, however, please remember how you did when taking the above test (cool/uncool rich/poor). I think it proves that outward appearances should not matter, but they do.

  23. I think the man who shot the boy is guilty and he should definitely get arrested by police.

  24. Hi Elizabeth. Great point. More information is being released each day. Yesterday there were reports stating how Trevon attacked Mr. Zimerman prompting Zimmerman to use lethal force to defend himself. Sadly, with only one side of the story being told, it is nearly impossible for us to have ALL of the facts prior to making a judgment.

  25. The man who shot Trevon is definitley guilty and he should be put in jail for the shooting and for thinking that Trevon was up to bad things and also for racial profiling. Mr. zimmermin should come out of hiding and live up to his consequences.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The killing was unfair and Zimmerman deserves to go to jail.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Okay so I think that the person who murdered Trevon should go to jail and be left in there for a lifetime. You don't just judge people by how they look.

  28. I think it is rediculous that Zimmerman killed Trevon just because he was wearing a hoody. I bet if somebody went into Zimmerman's closet that he has a hoody somewhere in there. He should defenitley be but in jail. The way people dress is how they express themselves and Zimmerman basically killed Trevon for expressing himself through what he wore.

  31. I think that Zimmerman should have handled the situation better instead of shooting. I don't know how Zimmerman shot the gun if he got wounded in the head. Also Trevon was not armed nor was he doing anything bad. I give my best wishes to Trevons family.

  32. I strongly believe Mr. Zimmerman should face the consequences and come out of hiding. Since Trevon is no longer with us we only have half of the story and the rest is questionable. But I believe Mr. Zimmerman is guilty.

  34. Trevon shouldn't have been killed just because he was wearing a hoodie and was african-american. There are many other people that do the wear the same thing!

  35. New Information to consider:

    By msnbc.com staff
Updated at 7:09 a.m. ET: Surveillance video footage of George Zimmerman being led from a police car shortly after he fatally shot teenager Trayvon Martin does not appear to show any injuries or bloodstains, but his attorney says the video is too grainy to be revealing.

This video contradicts George Zimemrman's story detailing how Trevon Martin attacked him, breaking his nose and slamming his head into the curb.

  37. George Zimemrman was wrong to kill Trevon just because he looked suspicious. If I wore a hoodie and got shot, or one of my friends or family did, I would protest and fight for the rights that he/she had.

    ReplyDelete
  38. How could George Zimmerman kill someone for being "suspicious" and then lie by blaming it on the person he killed? That's horrible! Mr. Zimmerman is DEFINETELY GUILTY!

  39. Don't judge someone by what they look like. That's a common quote that's meaningful. But Mr. Zimmerman didn't follow it. He judged a person by their "cover".

  40. George Zimmerman was finally arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder!
